Turtagrø - Midtmaradalen - Hjelle

Route info

Description

You start this route from the old lodge in Turtagrö (the building was destroyed in a fire but they are building a new one) and walk in an open green landscape. The ground will be more and more rocky and far away you'll see Tindeklubbhytta in front of the lake Skagastölvatnet. At the end of the lake the glacier Skagastölsbreen starts. The glacier is classified as safe but you never know. Walk over the glacier and up to the crest. From here it's close to Skagastölsbu or "the hut on the crest" which they often call it. Here you'll face a marvellous view with Storen and Midtmaradalen.

To get down to Midtmaradalen can be a little tricky because there are no path signs. Keep to the left and try to find a nice passage down the steep area. In Midtmaradalen there are no problems to walk. The whole valley is nice until you reach the more steeper parts at the end. The path is easy to discover but it can be slippery and muddy when it's rainy. The terrain now turns into birch forest.

After a while you'll see an oasis in the djungle, Stölsmaradalen, with nice meadows. The rest of the route is downhill in birch forest and you pass the cosy lodge Avdalen. From the lodge you follow a nice path the whole way to Hjelle, which is just a big lav!

Hiking time

12 hours

Worth to know

Place your tent in Midtmaradalen or in Stölsmaradalen.

Storen or Store Skagastölstind is the third highest mountain in Norway. But you'll need some climbing experience to reach the top.
