Memurubu - Besseggen - Gjendesheim

Route info

Description

This is a classic one. Start from Memurubu and begin your walk in the steep hillside. You'll notice very fast when you meet a lot of people here in all ages that this is one of the most popular routes in Jotunheimen .

After some kilometers the path will be much more flat and you walk next to Björnbolttjörna. From here you actually get some downhill walking to Bessvatnet. Now the real Besseggen begin. The edge will be steeper and steeper. With a little help from your hands you get no problems to walk on the edge. If you look to the left you have the lake Bessvatnet and to the right lake Gjende. The level difference between these lakes are 400 metres, marvellous. And you must notice the green color in Gjende and the blue color in Bessvatnet.

When you are up at the top, Veslefjellet, you can relax and begin the walk down to Gjendesheim.

Hiking time

6 hours

Worth to know

We recommend that you place your tent near the lodges because of the steep and stony terrain.

The green color in lake Gjende is particles from glaciers nearby.
